Mechanical

Shift Indicators

Standard:

  • Shift indicators must be legible and accurate in any gear.
  • The shift indicator lamp will illuminate (if equipped).

Recommended Test Procedure:

While pressing the brake pedal down with your right foot, carefully pull the shift lever downward through each gear while observing the alignment of the shift indicator. The gear should always match the indicator. If equipped with a shift light, the operation should be verified during the test drive.

Cruise Control

Standard:

  • The cruise will set, resume, and turn off.
  • The cruise will hold a constant speed.

Recommended Test Procedure:

The vehicle should be taken up to speed where the cruise can be set. The integrity of all functions should be tested, including turning the cruise off. There should not be any variation in the speed stability once it is set.

Speedometer/Odometer

Standard:

  • The mileage on the odometer must reflect the actual mileage of the vehicle, and the speedometer should be accurate.
  • The speedometer and odometer should operate as they were designed.
  • The trip odometer should be operational and should reset.

Recommended Test Procedure:

The odometer should show no signs of tampering. The vehicle should be taken up to multiple speeds to verify speedometer and odometer operation. The trip odometer should reset.

Cold and Hot Start

Standard:

  • The vehicle will not have excessive cranking time.
  • The vehicle will not exhibit a rough idle or engine miss.

Recommended Test Procedure:

The vehicle should be started cold to make sure that it exhibits proper starting habits. When the vehicle has reached high enough temperature to open the thermostat, then it should be started to verify proper operation of a hot start.

Fuel Pump

Standard:

  • The electric fuel pump should come on when the key is turned to the run position.
  • The fuel pump should have no excessive noise.
  • Mechanical pumps should not exhibit any leaks.

Recommended Test Procedure:

The vehicle should be started and should not exhibit excessive crank times. An excessive crank time could be a sign of a bad fuel pump relay. You should listen for excessive fuel pump noises. Some fuel pump noise will be normal and some vehicle models will be louder than others. Mechanical pumps should be visually inspected for leaks.

Acceleration

Standard:

  • The vehicle will have adequate acceleration for that particular make and model.
  • The vehicle will not exhibit any misfires or hesitations.
  • The vehicle should be accelerated from 0 to 50 and should maintain a constant speed.

Recommended Test Procedure:

The vehicle should be accelerated to 50 miles an hour. The individual performing the test should be very observant sensing any hesitations or misfires that the vehicle may have.
