NAAA Member Auctions Report $90.6 Billion in Sales for 2015

Sales of used vehicles totaled 9.3 million units worth $90.6 billion at National Auto Auction Association (NAAA) member auctions last year, according to the trade organization’s 19th annual survey. The survey found that the number of vehicles entering the auctions increased by 5.7% to 16.6 million and the number of units sold was up 6.5%.

Conducted by CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP of Arlington, Va., for NAAA, the survey provides the most accurate picture available of the wholesale auto auction industry, with a 76% response rate representing 255 NAAA North American member auctions. The reported total vehicles entered and sold and the related gross values are projected to estimate the totals for all 334 NAAA member auctions.

Dealer Consignment vehicles represented the largest number of units sold at 57.1%, Finance & Fleet (lease, fleet, repo) at 35.1%, followed by Manufacturer (factory) vehicles 6.9%, and 0.9% from (other) sources.

“The 2015 results are encouraging, said NAAA Chief Executive Officer Frank Hackett. The survey results show the strength and depth of a mature industry that has demonstrated its resiliency. I am confident we’ll continue to be a vital and growing part of our nation’s economy for years to come.”

The average NAAA auction member operates an 8-lane facility on 78 acres, employs 137 people with a payroll of $3.8 million, and contributes $17 thousand annually to charity.
